How is PLA made?

Polymaker Igneo

Abundant and rapidly renewable plant resources capture and sequester atmospheric carbon over their growing season, producing simple sugars via the process of photosynthesis. Through a process of fermentation and separation, these harvested plant sugars are converted into lactic acid. A lactic acid building block is transformed into Ingeo, a performance thermoplastic with physical characteristics and performance tailored for filament production and printing.

Commerical Compostability

PolyTerra™ PLA is a newly developed material from Polymaker called Fully Bio Compound (FBC) - a bioplastic mainly made with NatureWorks high quality Ingeo PLA and compounded with naturally occurring elements which reduces the plastic content of PolyTerra PLA by 15-20%. With this new formulation, Polymaker have improved the compostability rate of PLA to drive the global effort towards composting bioplastics in commercial composting facilities*.
*Commercial composting timescales are typically 8-10 weeks for PAS 100.

PolyTerra PLA Composting Steps

Polymaker ran a compostability test, certified to ISO 14855-1, with a third party laboratory that revealed thanks to the organic compounds, PolyTerra™ PLA degraded faster than a comparable PLA material. The test was completed by putting small pellets of PolyTerra™ PLA in a 2-4 months old plant compost (including a wide variety of microorganisms) and heating the system up to 60˚C. During this process the PolyTerra™ PLA will start to decompose into carbon dioxide, water and mineral salts and the aforementioned elements are monitored in order to calculate the mass of PolyTerra™ PLA degraded. 

After 45 days, 93.6% of PolyTerra PLA degraded and 79.9% of PolyLite PLA degraded. The testing demonstrated that PolyTerra™ PLA degraded up 15% faster than PolyLite™ PLA and from Polymakers estimation it could take less than 100 days for PolyTerra PLA to fully degrade.

Please note that PolyTerra™ PLA degrades under the specific conditions of industrial composting, namely, at certain temperature and humidity with the presence of micro-organisms. The degrade rate will depend on the size and thickness of the printed part. When PolyTerra™ PLA is correctly composted, it breaks down into carbon dioxide, water, biomass and mineral salts of any other elements present. The material fully degrades with no toxic residues and the compost supports plant growth.

Jam-Free™ technology

Polymaker Jam-Free TechnologyPolymakers patented Jam-Free™ technology dramatically improves the heat stability of PolyTerra™ PLA filament, by combining the latest development in biopolymer formulation and advanced polymer processing technologies. As a result, PolyTerra™ PLA filament exhibits a high softening temperature of more than 100 °C, so while printing, the filament will never soften in the “cold end” and can melt rapidly once entering the heating zone. This leads to extremely smooth printing and no more nozzle-jams caused by heat-creep!

Where is heat creep common?

  • 3D printers with cheap or older extruder designs.
  • 'Higher Temperature' or enclosed 3D Printers.
  • Dual Extrusion 3D Printers (as the filament sits idle for long periods of time)

Please note there can be many causes for why any filament may jam, including printing too close to the bed. Polymakers Jam-Free™ technology is designed to prevent jams caused by heat creep.  Jam-Free™ technology increases the softening temperature of the filament, not the heat resistance of printed parts. Parts printed in PolyTerra™ PLA exhibit normal thermal properties and heat resistance.

Polymaker 3D Printing Filament

PolyTerra™ PLA like all other Polymaker materials is manufactured using state-of-the-art polymer processing technologies and equipment. Polymakers rigorous minimum 8 quality control processes ensure industrial standards of reliability for a consistent customer experience.
Tolerance: Polymakers custom developed extrusion, control and monitoring solutions to ensure filament tolerance and roundness meet Polymakers strict quality standards.
Reliable Mechanical, Colouring & Printing Properties: Every batch of filament products are tested to ensure all quality specs (melt flow, softening point, mechanical, diameter, round-ness) are met.
Drying & Vacuum Sealing: Before packaging, all Polymaker filaments are dried to a moisture level of < 0.1% to ensure the best printing quality and are vacuum sealed to protect the filament from moisture. All vacuum packaged products are left for 24 hours before boxing to ensure they are leak-free.

Polymaker PolyTerra PLA Bioplastic

Carton Spool: PolyTerra™ PLA is wound on Polymakers 1kg carton spools, manufactured from recycled materials. The cutaway and weight gauge on the side of the spool make it easy to see exactly how much filament is left for your next printing project. PolyTerra™ PLA's recycled cardboard packaging and carton spool are the first step taken towards creating more eco-sustainable products.
Resealable Bag: PolyTerra™ PLA is packaged in a vacuum sealed resealable bag to ensure your filament is moisture free. Like all other PLA filaments, PolyTerra™ PLA is hygroscopic so we recommend using this bag for filament storage.

STORAGE & DRYING

Like other PLA filaments, PolyTerra™ Marble PLA is susceptible to absorbing moisture from the air which can subsequently effect the print quality and mechanical properties of the final prints.

Before packaging, PolyTerra™ Marble PLA is dried to ensure the best printing quality and filaments are vacuum sealed to protect the filament from moisture. When not in use PolyTerra™ Marble PLA should be stored away from sunlight in the packaged resealable bag. We recommend storing PolyTerra™ Marble PLA in the PolyBox™ or a dry cabinet during printing to prevent moisture absorption which will lower the quality of the print. The PolyBox™ keeps the filament at dry conditions (relative humidity of 15% or less). 

If you hear popping sounds and notice that the surface quality of your print is uneven or the color is not consistent, this is a likely indicator that the filament has absorbed too much moisture. Spools of PolyTerra™ Marble PLA can be dried in a preheated convection oven at 55˚C for up to 6 hours. Results may vary depending on the accuracy of your oven so please be conservative. FAQ

Q: How does the surface finish of PolyTerra™ Marble PLA compare to other Marble PLA materials?
A: Many marble and stone PLA filaments on the market are manufactured with a semi-gloss PLA filament. The base filament; PolyTerra™ PLA is a matte PLA filament which offers some unique benefits. The matte surface finish of PolyTerra™ PLA filaments can effectively hide the layers in the 3D print and help mimic the chalky stone aesthetic.

Q: What is the best bed temperature to use?
Compared to regular PLA filaments, we find PolyTerra™ Marble PLA works best with slightly lower bed temperatures around 40 - 50˚C. Higher temperatures can soften the filament and increase the chance of warping.

Q: Does PolyTerra™ Marble PLA  features Jam-Free™ technology and does Jam-Free™ technology prevent all filament jamming?
A: Like PolyTerra™ PLA, PolyTerra™ Marble PLA features Polymakers Jam-Free™ technology improves the heat stability of the filament and is specifically designed to prevent jamming caused by heat creep. There are many reasons why a material may jam, such as printing with the wrong extruder temperature, compounded particles blocking the nozzle or incorrect nozzle height; all marble PLA filaments are susceptible to these possibilities.

Q: What support materials can I use with this product?
A: PolyTerra™ Marble PLA features improved support removal properties compared to standard PLA and PLA+. If your printer is capable of multi-material printing, Polymaker’s PolyDissolve™ S1 or PolySupport™ filament are fantastic support filaments for PolyTerra™ Marble PLA.
