PolyTerra PLA Graph

Most PLA filaments show excellent stiffness and rigidity however are relatively brittle. 3D printed parts can easily crack if dropped and fine structures can easily snap off limiting the applications they can be used for. The biocompound elements in PolyTerra™ PLA result in a tougher PLA material, without compromising print quality.

PolyTerra™ PLA also exhibits better support removal properties, enabling users to more easily break away support or rafts from the surface of their prints. For users capable of multi-material 3D printing, PolyTerra™ PLA can also be used to 3D print complex geometry with dedicated support materials such as Polymakers PolyDissolve™ S1 and PolySupport™. PolyLite™ PLA has minimal warping and shrinking compared to other materials, perfect for applications featuring flat surfaces and hard angles, or requiring tight tolerances for fit.

Polymaker PLA

How is PLA made?

High quality raw ingredients are critical to manufacturing consistent and reliable filament, for this reason Polymaker partnered with NatureWorks and use Ingeo PLA resins as a core ingredient for their range of PLA filaments. Polymakers innovative R&D technologies, compounding and extrusion systems combined with Natureworks Ingeo resins produce a reliable 3D printing filament.

Polymaker Igneo

Abundant and rapidly renewable plant resources capture and sequester atmospheric carbon over their growing season, producing simple sugars via the process of photosynthesis. Through a process of fermentation and separation, these harvested plant sugars are converted into lactic acid. A lactic acid building block is transformed into Ingeo, a performance thermoplastic with physical characteristics and performance tailored for filament production and printing.

Jam-Free™ technology

Polymaker Jam-Free TechnologyPolymakers patented Jam-Free™ technology dramatically improves the heat stability of PolyTerra™ PLA filament, by combining the latest development in biopolymer formulation and advanced polymer processing technologies. As a result, PolyTerra™ PLA filament exhibits a high softening temperature of more than 100 °C, so while printing, the filament will never soften in the “cold end” and can melt rapidly once entering the heating zone. This leads to extremely smooth printing and no more nozzle-jams caused by heat-creep!

Where is heat creep common?

  • 3D printers with cheap or older extruder designs.
  • 'Higher Temperature' or enclosed 3D Printers.
  • Dual Extrusion 3D Printers (as the filament sits idle for long periods of time)

Please note there can be many causes for why any filament may jam, including printing too close to the bed. Polymakers Jam-Free™ technology is designed to prevent jams caused by heat creep.  Jam-Free™ technology increases the softening temperature of the filament, not the heat resistance of printed parts. Parts printed in PolyTerra™ PLA exhibit normal thermal properties and heat resistance.

Industry Leading Quality Control

Polymaker 3D Printing Filament

PolyTerra™ PLA like all other Polymaker materials is manufactured using state-of-the-art polymer processing technologies and equipment. Polymakers rigorous minimum 8 quality control processes ensure industrial standards of reliability for a consistent customer experience.
Tolerance: Polymakers custom developed extrusion, control and monitoring solutions to ensure filament tolerance and roundness meet Polymakers strict quality standards.
Reliable Mechanical, Colouring & Printing Properties: Every batch of filament products are tested to ensure all quality specs (melt flow, softening point, mechanical, diameter, round-ness) are met.
Drying & Vacuum Sealing: Before packaging, all Polymaker filaments are dried to a moisture level of < 0.1% to ensure the best printing quality and are vacuum sealed to protect the filament from moisture. All vacuum packaged products are left for 24 hours before boxing to ensure they are leak-free.

Packaging

Polymaker PolyTerra PLA Bioplastic

Carton Spool: PolyTerra™ PLA is wound on Polymakers 1kg carton spools, manufactured from recycled materials. The cutaway and weight gauge on the side of the spool make it easy to see exactly how much filament is left for your next printing project.
Resealable Bag: PolyTerra™ PLA is packaged in a vacuum sealed resealable bag to ensure your filament is moisture free. Like all other PLA filaments, PolyTerra™ PLA is hygroscopic so we recommend using this bag for filament storage.

STORAGE & DRYING

Before packaging, PolyTerra™ PLA is dried to ensure the best printing quality and filaments are vacuum sealed to protect the filament from moisture. When not in use PolyTerra™ PLA should be stored away from sunlight in the packaged resealable bag.

Like other PLA filaments, PolyTerra™ PLA is susceptible to absorbing moisture from the air which can subsequently effect the quality and mechanical properties of the final prints. We recommend storing PolyTerra™ PLA in the PolyBox™ or a dry cabinet during printing to prevent moisture absorption which will lower the quality of the print. The PolyBox™ keeps the filament at dry conditions (relative humidity of 15% or less).

If you hear popping sounds and notice that the surface quality of your print is uneven or the color is not consistent, this is a likely indicator that the filament has absorbed too much moisture. Spools of PolyTerra™ PLA can be dried in a preheated convection oven at 80˚C for up to 8 hours. Results may vary depending on the accuracy of your oven so please be conservative. For more information about filament drying please read our user guide.

FAQ

Q: How does PolyTerra™ PLA compare to other PLA materials?
A: Unlike most PLA filaments which typically display a shiny surface finish, PolyTerra™ PLA renders parts with a very smooth matte surface finish. PolyTerra™ PLA has been specifically engineered to further improve upon PLA's ease-of-use; manufactured with Polymaker's patented Jam-Free™ technology to prevent heat creep jamming and during R&D, significant time was spent optimizing the softening temperature, material flow and printing characteristics to ensure excellent results on a wide range of 3D printers. PolyTerra™ PLA is also offers improved toughness compared to other PLA filaments also offers better support removal characteristics.

Q: Does Jam-Free™ technology prevent all filament jamming?
A: Jam-Free™ technology is designed to prevent jamming caused by heat creep. There are many reasons why a material may jam, such as printing with the wrong extruder temperature or incorrect nozzle height; Polymaker's Jam-Free™ technology won't prevent jamming in these cases.

Q: Is PolyTerra™️ PLA food safe?
A: Polymaker's PolyTerra™️ PLA is compliance with RoHS Directives 2011/65/EU and (EU) 2015/863 and REACH regulation, which means it does not contain toxic or harmful substance listed. However due to the nature of FDM 3D printing, the printed PolyTerra™️ PLA parts might have micro-cracks and holes which are invisible to the naked eye even though the prints look smooth. Bacteria are prone to grow in these micro-cracks and holes and thus we do not recommend to use the 3D printed parts in food contact applications.

Q: How long does it take for PolyTerra™️ PLA to degrade?
A: PolyTerra™️ PLA degrades under the specific conditions of industrial composting, namely, at certain temperature and humidity with the presence of micro-organisms. The degrade rate will depend on the size and thickness of the printed part. Polymaker has run a compostability test, certified to ISO 14855-1, with a third party laboratory that revealed PolyTerra™️ PLA degraded faster than a comparable PLA material. The test was completed by putting small pellets of PolyTerra™️ PLA in a 2-4 months old plant compost (including a wide variety of microorganisms) and heating up the system up to 60˚C. During this process the PolyTerra™️ PLA will start to decompose into carbon dioxide, water and mineral salts and the aforementioned elements are monitored in order to calculate the mass of PolyTerra™️ PLA degraded. After 45days, 93.6% of PolyTerra™️ PLA degraded and from Polymakers estimation it could take less than 100 days for PolyTerra™️ PLA to fully degrade. Polymaker ran the exact same test with their PolyLite™️ PLA which is a pure regular PLA and, after 45days, 79.9% of it degraded. Which means PolyTerra™️ PLA degrades up to 15% faster than regular PLA.

Q: Can PLA be printed at large scales without warping?
A: One of the benefits of PLA is the ability to print large parts with excellent dimensional stability; we have many customers printing large full-size printing projects in PolyTerra™ PLA. Please note that while PLA materials don't warp in most situations, printing with poor first layer adhesion can cause any material to warp and printing or the heated bed too hot can cause any PLA filament to crystallize rapidly, creating internal stress and warping.

Q: What support materials can I use with this product?
A: Polymaker’s PolyDissolve™ S1 or PolySupport™ filament are the recommended support filaments for PolyTerra™ PLA. If your 3D printer is not equipped for multi-material, self-support can be used.
