Polymaker PolyMax PC-FR Filament

PolyMax™ is a family of advanced 3D printing filaments produced with Polymaker’s Nano-reinforcement technology, to deliver exceptional mechanical properties and printing quality. PolyMax™ PC-FR is a flame retardant PC filament (UL94V-0/1.5 mm) displaying excellent toughness, strength and heat resistance. Further expanding the applications of 3D printing towards more demanding use cases, PolyMax™ PC-FR is a flame retardant variant of Polymakers popular PolyMax ™ PC filament.  The FR stands for flame retardant – the main feature of this polycarbonate-based compound. Achieving V0 performance in the UL94 flame retardancy test, PolyMax ™ PC-FR benefits applications where respective material approval is required. This allows PolyMax™ PC-FR to be applied for battery housings, motor mounts in aerospace and other industries. Within the automotive and Electronics & Electrical industry, many professionals are well accustomed with such FR materials.

Typically flame retardant compounds will significantly reduce the toughness of the raw PC material, Polymaker has introduced its nano reinforcement technology that is featured in all PolyMax™ materials and have found the right balance between the mechanical properties and the flame retardant performance. This boosts the fracture toughness of the FR material and produces a flame-retardant filament that can still perform in demanding applications. Like PolyMax™ PC, PolyMax™ PC-FR displays excellent rigidity and is one of the stiffest unreinforced thermoplastics available.

3D printing PC has commonly required high nozzle and bed temperatures (up to 320°C / 120°C). PolyMax™ PC-FR is formulated specifically for 3D printing; resulting in a product which combines the desirable mechanical performance of PC with more accessible printing requirements.

PolyMax™ PC-FR uses Covestro’s Makrolon® showing a good balance between mechanical performance and safety, which has already been applied in electronic motorbikes, aerospace spare parts, and automotive production.

Users with a dual extrusion 3D printer can print supports with Polymakers PolyDissolve™ S2. PolyDissolve™ S2 is a dedicated support material engineered to deliver water dissolvable supports with perfect interfacing and improved part surface quality. PolyDissolve™ S2 is compatible with a wide range of high temperature Polymaker filaments.

Polymaker 3D Printing Filament

PolyMax™ PC-FR like all other Polymaker materials is manufactured using state-of-the-art polymer processing technologies and equipment. Polymakers rigorous minimum 8 quality control processes ensure industrial standards of reliability for a consistent customer experience.
Tolerance: Polymakers custom developed extrusion, control and monitoring solutions to ensure filament tolerance and roundness meet Polymakers strict quality standards.
Reliable Mechanical, Colouring & Printing Properties: Every batch of filament products are tested to ensure all quality specs (melt flow, softening point, mechanical, diameter, round-ness) are met.
Drying & Vacuum Sealing: Before packaging, all Polymaker filaments are dried to a moisture level of < 0.1% to ensure the best printing quality and are vacuum sealed to protect the filament from moisture. All vacuum packaged products are left for 24 hours before boxing to ensure they are leak-free.


Transparent Spool: PolyMax™ PC-FR is wound on Polymakers 1kg transparent spools. With the transparent spool, it is easy to see exactly how much filament is left for your next printing project.
Resealable Bag: PolyMax™ PC-FR is packaged in a vacuum sealed resealable bag to ensure your filament is moisture free. Like all other PC filaments, PolyMax™ PC-FR is hygroscopic so we recommend using this bag for filament storage.

Storage & Drying

Before packaging, PolyMax™ PC-FR is dried to ensure the best printing quality and filaments are vacuum sealed to protect the filament from moisture. When not in use PolyMax™ PC-FR should be stored away from sunlight in the packaged resealable bag.

Like other PC filaments, PolyMax™ PC-FR is susceptible to absorbing moisture from the air which can subsequently effect the quality and mechanical properties of the final prints. We recommend storing PolyMax™ PC-FR in the PolyBox™ or a dry cabinet during printing to prevent moisture absorption which will lower the quality of the print. The PolyBox™ keeps the filament at dry conditions (relative humidity of 15% or less). 

If you hear popping sounds and notice that the surface quality of your print is uneven or the color is not consistent, this is a likely indicator that the filament has absorbed too much moisture. Spools of PolyMax™ PC-FR can be dried in a preheated convection oven at 80˚C for up to 8 hours. Results may vary depending on the accuracy of your oven so please be conservative. Q: Polymaker manufacture many different PC filaments, which one should I purchase?
A: PolyLite™ PC and PolyMax™ PC are the best choices for users who are interested in 3D printing strong PolyCarbonate parts that don’t have a specialized requirement. These two materials are easier to print when compared to PC filaments from other brands. PolyLite™ PC offers transparency and the best value for general purpose printing and PolyMax™ PC is our most popular PC filament, with boosted toughness and additional benefits in printability. Aside from variances in price and mechanical performance, Polymaker™ PC-ABS, Polymaker™ PC-PBT and PolyMax™ PC-FR offer unique solutions for industrial applications, with excellent mechanical performance and slightly higher printing requirements. Polymaker™ PC-PBT for example offers excellent toughness at subzero temperatures whereas PolyMax™ PC-FR offers the best flame retardancy. Q: Does Polymakers Nano-reinforcement technology impact printability?
A: The nano-reinforcement of PolyMax™ PC-FR is NOT a fiber reinforcement,  so customers can confidently print this material with a standard brass nozzle. The good mechanical strength of PolyMax™ PC-FR is achieved with no compromise in printing quality or usability.

Q: Is a heated chamber critical to print PolyMax™ PC-FR?
A: Compared to PolyMax™ PC, PolyMax™ PC-FR has higher environmental temperature requirements. We have had success printing small parts without a heated chamber but certainly a heated chamber will be critical for many geometries.

Q: Can PC be printed at large scales without warping?
A: A stable high temperature environment is required to print larger PC-FR parts without warping and whether a part is susceptible to warping will vary on how the residual stress releases within the parts geometry. Most users print PC-FR with the heated bed set to 100˚C and an enclosed heated chamber to heat the surrounding environment; this effectively reduces internal stress which cause PC-FR to warp or crack. To guarantee that PC-FR can be printed at any size without warping, 3D printing with a professionally designed heated chamber is required.

Q: What support materials can I use with this product?
A:  Polymaker’s PolyDissolve™ S2 filament is the recommended support filament for PolyMax™ PC-FR. If your 3D printer is not equipped for multi-material, self-support can be used.
